In order to explore the world of Crossroads, you will need to have the right tools, such as a client program that is able to act as an VT-100/ANSI terminal emulator and implements the Telnet protocol.
Fortunately, most modern operating systems come pre-configured with at least a minimal Telnet application that can be used to get started.
You may find that you are looking for more features than most OS “stock” Telnet clients offer. Many players user add-on Telnet/MUD clients that implement a feature known as “macros”. Macros allow you to program custom keys to quickly enter commonly used commands for you.
Below is a small list of client programs for various OSes that you can use to play Crossroads. Some are free and some have small costs associated with them.
| Application | Platform/OS | Cost | Submitted By |
|---|---|---|---|
| KevTerm | Windows | Free To Use | Tanis |
| SimpleMU | Windows | Free Demo | Jan |
| Mud-Master | Windows | Free To Use | Sandrax |
| JamochaMUD | Java | Free To Use | Robert Murphey |
| TinyFugue | Multiple | Free To Use | Robert Murphey |
| zMUD | Windows | Free Demo | Robert Murphey |
| Savitar | Macintosh | Free Demo | kurtk |
Please feel free to test others and add them here.
A note about Windows clients:
Robert Murphey does not run any version of the Windows or Macintosh operating systems and is unable to test/use/review any of those clients submitted.
Accuracy of the client information is solely the responsibility of the submitters.
Discussion
I believe the future of telnet emulation is through our online mobile phones. Im a windows mobile user, so I can really only talk about that platform.
There are 3 telnet emulators that come to mind for Windows Mobile. Mocha Telnet, Telnet Force, and Aton Connect for SSH VT220 Telnet
None of these in my opinion were made with MUD's (Multi User Dungeon gaming) in mind. Which is a shame. I have played Xroads using both Mocha and Telnet Force. I was not satisfied. You can't change the font size or type or color, or even configure a good set of macros for a real MUD gaming experience. I would love to see something like CMUD or ZMUD on mobiles.
I posted this here, because I feel communication on this subject should take place somewhere. Also it would be wise to keep a hopeful eye on these emulators, as they get better with time. Do any other mobile users on the Iphone, Droid or WebOS or even the blackberry know of any other good Telnet emulators for their devices? Or does anyone know if I missed something for Windows Mobile?
About ZMUD …
CMUD is a better client than ZMUD for Vista and Windows 7 users. CMUD/ZMUD has yet to put Crossroads of The Elements in their massive list of MUD games … cheapos! CMUDPro 3.22a BETA charges you $30 for a Beta! Beta software are unfinished and buggy. CMUDPro 2.7 is their last stable version from 2008. Seen it up in numerous share sites. ;)
Many MUDs, as well as many MUD clients themselves, are very command line intensive. There may be a way to alias or reduce the instruction set needed to play a MUD over a phone, but it would be non-trivial. The market is probably not large enough to motivate any app developer to tackle this, or more likely, not enough market research has been done in this area to make that determination.
